Following our shortlisting in the Greater Austin Business Awards, SecureCare was invited to appear on Talk Radio 1370, home of The Austin iLab. We discussed the nomination itself; how SecureCare has become one of the upcoming innovators in the Austin technology marketplace; and also why SecureCare’s smart messaging and secure fax solutions make us a partner of choice for any organization requiring the safe handling of sensitive information.

After receiving a warm welcome from hosts Stuart and Kyle Frazier, Aleks Szymanski (CEO) and John Pittman (VP Business Development) were asked how SecureCare ‘represented a new creative approach to solving an issue?’.
Aleks Szymanski said: “We’ve come up with five key themes or five key approaches, which explain how we think about things.”

1. Creating a core platform that can be adapted

“Our approach is to create a core, scalable, high performance platform for whatever product we’re developing. Once that core platform is in place, we then enable clients to extend that or to be flexible with it, to meet their particular needs.”

“There is a danger sometimes for technology companies, that they try to be too adaptable, or too ‘bespoke’, if you like. Everyone wants products or services tailored to them individually, which at the outset is not too much of a problem. The real challenge then arises as the client needs to maintain and grow their platform, to handle extra capacity for example.”

“It’s far better for all parties to have one core platform, as everyone then benefits from updates and improvements, and no-one gets lefts behind.”

2. People focused technology is key

“As we see it, another classic technology mistake is that you’re so excited and caught up in the technology, you don’t realize that someone actually needs to use it.”

“We think about the people first. If you don’t get the people bit right, it doesn’t matter how good the technology is. It can be the fastest, highest performance widget, gadget or platform on the planet, but if no-one can use it or figure out how to use it, it’s no help to anyone.”

“If you look at real success stories, let’s say Apple – they’ve invested in their operating system and their apps, so that they are really easy to use.”

“It’s the ‘squishy edge’ of technology – keeping the user front of mind – and it’s also the really tough bit for any technology company.”

“It’s not simply about what color font to use or where to put a button on a layout. It’s about spending the time understanding a particular customer and working out what they are trying to achieve.”

3. The cloud is king

“The idea is that wherever you are on the planet, and whatever device you’ve got, you can connect to our technology. Sometimes we have to install a few pieces on a local machine or on a mobile, but essentially all the cleverness is in the cloud.”

4. Being compliant with all devices

“This is a pretty challenging time for us, as every one of our customers has a different mix of devices or technology. Some will still be using Windows 95 and Internet Explorer 5.5 and others will have Macs, iPhones, iPads, Palms, Tablets, Blackberry, Android…”

“Our thinking is, as much as budget allows, we shouldn’t define how our customers use our technology. They should be allowed to do that. It just wouldn’t do to have us prescribing that our technology only works on ‘Windows XP, on this screen resolution, on Tuesdays’.“

5. Eco-friendly ethos is a natural fit

“This last theme fits nicely in to what we do, but it’s more than that for us. It is about reducing the impact on the environment and reducing or eliminating paper altogether, but it also goes back to our user-centered thinking. Where are our customers printing things out? Why are they printing it there? Why can’t we do something with it so that they don’t have to print it out?”

The interview also explored the SecureCare story, explaining how the company originated over 10 years ago, by helping healthcare organizations to bill more quickly by using digital signatures. The interview also goes on to discuss the outdated perceptions of faxing and how SecureCare’s encrypted secure faxing and document exchange platform exceeds compliance requirements set for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) and Graham-Leach-Bliley (GLBA).
